Cross is the 6th C of History. If you haven’t read the other articles in the series:

The cross was frequently used by the Romans and became a symbol of death. It was a painful and degrading way to die. Most ulitimately died by suffication. As the person hungon the cross, he or she would have to raise the body in order to breathe. As the person grew weaker, it was impossible to raise the body in order to breathe.

When Jesus died on the cross, the meaning changed. It provided a way for us to live eternally. Before the cross, sacrifices had to made continually. The blood of the animals could not cover all sins. The cross became the substitutionary atonement for our sin. Www.gotquestions.org words it like this: “Jesus Christ died in our place when He was crucified on the cross. We deserved to be the ones placed on that cross to die because we are the ones who live sinful lives. But Christ took the punishment on Himself in our place—He substituted Himself for us and took what we rightly deserved. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).”

Many years ago, our church had a very moving service. We were given a piece of paper and asked to write a sin on it. The deacons took those papers and nailed them to the cross. It was one of the most moving services I’ve ever been involved in. As we heard each and every nail being hammered into the cross, you fully understood that it was your sin that was condemning Christ to death.

Jesus died for my sin and yours. It was a gift I did nothing to deserve and can never repay. Once and for all, the issue of my sin has been settled. May we all remain grateful for that sacrifice that changed our lives.
