Through the Word

Through the Word is an app I am currently trying out. I am cautiously optimistic about its use.

When you open the app, you choose what you want to do. You can choose a book of the Bible, a “Journey” or a Bible topic.

Through the Word goes through the Bible chapter by chapter. It gives an 8-10 minute summary of the chapter. It then provides an audio recording of the chapter. The summaries that I have listened to seem to be pretty solid theologically.

I like several things about this app. The pastor who does them provides background information to help understand the context, along with a summary of what’s in the chapter. He uses cross-references to help understand the text better. He also points out areas that point us to Christ. I especially like this feature.

The “Journeys” seem to be divided by different themes in the Bible. Journey 1 is a great place to start for anyone who is new to reading the Bible or anyone who want s to review the basics of the Christian life. While I haven’t actually done one of the journeys, they do look interesting.

There is a section on Bible Topics and Extras. This is where topics can be explored using the BIble as the basis for understanding. I am not a topical study promoter, however, there are times when a certain topic is worth exploring. I don’t recommend a steady diet of topical studies.

I am not far enough into it to confidently say that it is theologically sound. However, it has the potential to be. Try it out with discerning eyes and ears.

Bless App

The Bless App is a way to pray for those around you. When you set up your profile with your address, it populates a list of your neighbors’ names and addresses using public records. Sometimes, it is not completely current. I only know that because I know almost all of my neighbors. If the house has been sold recently, there may even be more than one name.

Once your list of neighbors has been populated, you can begin to pray for them. The app allows you to set a reminder for the same time each day to pray for five of your neighbors. It randomly selects the five.

You can go into the settings for each individual neighbor. You can record each time you pray for them. It also allows you to record anytime you have listened to them, had a meal with them, or served them in any way. You can also record a story about the specific neighbor. Finally, you can record if they are a believer.
