Why Theology Matter
Does the word “theology” scare you? A lot of people think theology is just for pastors, professors, or seminary students. Others assume it’s too complicated or academic for everyday believers. But here’s the thing: theology actually matters for all of us, because it shapes how we understand God, the Bible, our faith, and the world we live in. To put it simply, theology is the study of God—His nature, His works, and His relationship to the world. Theology is a deeply personal and spiritually transformative journey.
Theology and Spiritual Growth
Theology must be linked to the study of the Bible, because it is essential for spiritual growth and sanctification. To know God rightly, we must study what He has revealed about Himself through His Word. All our answers are in the pages of Scripture.
Scripture repeatedly reminds us of this truth. Proverbs 2:6 declares:
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”
Likewise, Proverbs 9:10 teaches:
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
If wisdom begins with knowing God, then we have to know God and grow in our knowledge of Him. The Bible is the record of what God has said and done throughout history. By studying Scripture carefully, we gain wisdom, discernment, and spiritual maturity.
Second Peter 1:3 tells us that God’s divine power “has given us everything we need for life and godliness.” Through theology and our Bible study, we learn how to live faithfully and walk in obedience to Christ.
The Apostle Paul explains that spiritual truths cannot be fully understood apart from God’s Spirit. First Corinthians 2:14 says:
“The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness.”
As we study, we grow in our spiritual understanding. Romans 10:17 further emphasizes the importance of Scripture by stating:
“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.”
Spiritual understanding and faith are cultivated through God’s Word. Studying theology helps us move beyond shallow knowledge into a deeper relationship with the Lord.
Theology Strengthens Faith
Studying theology strengthens our faith. When we have a firm foundation, we remain grounded when we face doubt, confusion, or false teaching. It isn’t “if” we face trouble, but “when”. We need to be equipped when trials come.
Paul encouraged the church in Colossians 2:6–7:
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith.”
Christians are meant to grow spiritually. Second Peter 3:18 urges believers to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” Good theology equips us to continue growing in spiritual maturity and biblical understanding.
Jesus Himself prayed in John 17:17:
“Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.”
The truth of God’s Word transforms us. Psalm 119:9 asks:
“How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word.”
Psalm 119:160 further declares:
“All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal.”
Theology teaches us how to apply biblical truth to everyday life. It helps us recognize truth from error and equips us to live faithfully in a confusing world.
Second Timothy 3:17 explains that Scripture equips us “for every good work.” Theology is not only about gaining knowledge—it is about becoming spiritually equipped to serve God faithfully.
Theology and Apologetics
Another reason theology matters is that it provides the foundation for apologetics. Apologetics is the practice of giving a reasonable defense of the Christian faith.
In our world, there is skepticism and many competing beliefs; we are often asked difficult questions about God, suffering, morality, and the reliability of Scripture. Good apologetics is grounded in sound theology. Without a proper understanding of God’s character and biblical truth, we may struggle to explain or defend their faith effectively. If we cannot answer the questions of others, it may cause us to doubt ourselves.
Theology helps us articulate what we believe and why we believe it. It gives us confidence when discussing spiritual matters and enables us to respond graciously and truthfully to those who question Christianity.
Conclusion
Theology matters because knowing God matters.
Theology helps us become rooted in God’s Word and transformed by God’s truth.
Every Christian is called to know God more deeply.
